The new system uses required payer and client benefits in- formation to provide a real-time expected reimbursement for equipment being or- dered, eliminating the need for manual calculations. "This automated, real-time information gives our funding specialists the ability to focus on moving the order for- ward more efficiently," said Bill Mixon, NSM CEO. "It also increases the accuracy of ini- tial communications with the client about their financial responsibility, so there are less surprises down the road." NSM reports the new reimbursement system, along with other service and technology initiatives, has improved productivity by 18% and reduced the time it takes per funding case by 6% so far in 2019. United Spinal, Permobil increase access to seat elevation NEW YORK – Members of the United Spinal Association now have the opportunity to apply for a Roll Forward Grant for a Smart- Drive or active-height seat elevator on a new Permobil wheelchair thanks to a new partnership between the two organizations. "We're thankful for the support of Permobil Foundation to empower our members to attain greater independence," said James Weisman, president and CEO of United Spinal. Grants are limited and will be given based on financial need. Since its launch in March 2017, Permobil Foundation has sup- ported more than 350 individuals and 250 nonprofit organizations. VMI offers roadside assistance program PHOENIX – Vantage Mobility International has partnered with Mobility Roadside As- sistance and Wrench Inc. to offer a roadside assistance program for wheelchair users. VMI will provide one year of complimentary roadside assistance for customers who pur- chase a vehicle with a new conversion from VMI, AMS Vans or Revability. This job is amazing in the sense that you see someone in their darkest moments and you see them out the other side. HME: You received the Distinguished Service Award. Why is service so important in this industry? Britton: When you start becoming part of the community—when you go to the Miracle League baseball games and see these kids play—it becomes more than a business or a job, it kind of becomes your life. One or two weekends a month, I'm in the community doing advocacy or some type of outreach. These people are my family and friends. HME: Were you surprised to receive the award? Britton: It was pretty shocking. I told my wife it was a surprise. Most people don't get awards until they retire or die; I'm still doing this and doing it well. That's why RESNA also announced earlier this year that anyone completing a certificate or degree in AT from an aca- demic program accredited by the Com- mission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, as recommended by the Committee on Accreditation for Reha- bilitation Engineering and Assistive Tech- nology Education, is eligible to reduce the required work experience. (Each course credit will reduce the work experience requirement by 15 hours; each fieldwork hour earned will reduce the work experi- ence requirement by one hour.) "It gives them a leg up," Raphael said. The two changes, together, help to address a projected scarcity in the num- ber of ATPs in the next few years, as a sig- nificant percentage of current ATPs retire. "These are two funnels that will be feeding into that pool right away," Rapha- el said. HME TORONTO – RESNA doled out a bevy of awards during its annual conference— part of RehabWeek 2019, June 24-28 in Toronto— including naming the Nation- al Mobility Equipment Dealers Associa- tion (NMEDA) as the recipient of the RESNA Leadership Award. The honor recognizes a company, agency or orga- nization for significant contributions to the field of assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering, and for sup- porting and recognizing RESNA and its mission of promoting access to AT for people with disabilities. NMEDA is a nonprofit trade association with more than 600 members, including mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers and drive rehab specialists. Other awards and honors handed out included naming Michelle Lange as a Fellow; Chapal Khasnabis, honorary fel- low; Travis Tallman, Samuel McFarland BY LIZ BEAULIEU, Editor LUMBERTON, N.C. – Southeastern Home Medical Equipment's complex rehab division hosted its first Education Expo in June, a sign of its growth since launching two years ago. The expo drew almost 40 area cli- nicians and 12 vendors, including Sunrise Medical, Quantum Rehab, Ki Mobility and Permobil. "The business is getting bigger by the month," said Zachary Stamper, man- ager. "We're doing about eight to 15 complex rehab wheelchairs per month, which is pretty good for the minimal staff we have." Stamper, who has 10 years of experi- ence in complex rehab, runs the divi- sion with Lisa Collins, an ATP. The expo featured vendor exhibits and a full day of education offering four CEUs, Stamper says. "Yes, you're looking to build your referral base with an event like this, but we also wanted to educate people on the need for these more complex wheelchairs," he said. "People around here have a tendency to order standard wheelchairs for everything, but those are for, I broke my leg and I'll be back up on my feet in a few months. You don't know what you don't know." The expo went so well, Stamper says there's another in the works for later this year. "There were people this time who were going to try and make it but didn't make it," he said. "I think we can get closer to 100 next time." Southeastern, which also offers a full line of HME and is owned by South- eastern Health, a nonprofit health sys- tem, launched the division to meet a "huge need" in the area, Stamper says. "We're a rural area closer to the c o a s t , " h e s a i d . " W h e n L i s a l e f t one of the national providers, there was no one locally to provide these services." RESNA highlights busy RehabWeek Memorial Mentorship Award; Perry Loh and Sue Redepenning, Emerging Leader Award; and Seanna Kringen and John Anschutz, Distinguished Service Award. RESNA also elected officers for three open positions on its board of directors. They are: Jennifer Boger, a RESNA mem- ber since 2008, and a member of the Cog- nitive and Sensory Loss, Engineers and Technologies, ATSC Cognitive Accessi- bility, Conference Planning committees (also a chair); Ed Giesbrecht, a RESNA member since 2014, and a member of the Conference Planning Committee (also a chair); Seong-Hee, a RESNA member since 2015 and an ATP since 2016, and a member of the Engineers and Technolo- gists and Marketing & Communications committees. They will join the board in August. Leaving the board are John Anschutz, Doug Gayton, Vince Schiappa and Cher Smith. HME
