"I think being focused on your core strengths and hyper-focused on technology solutions is absolutely criti- cal," he said. "You have to be very disciplined in how you manage your business. We've walked away from basic DME at bid rates because it's not sustainable." SuperCare Health has also walked away from commer- cial payers that have dropped reimbursement to unsustain- able levels, though Cassar thinks many of the premier payers are finally starting to recognize the need to increase rates. With Round 2019 looming, Cassar is also hopeful that pro- viders will bid more responsi- bly and reverse the race to the bottom. "I do believe the margins will increase and people will be more disciplined to not bid such low rates," he said. Kathleen Lindell: What happens is that a lot of providers are able to prescribe, but they may not know the nitty-gritty of oxygen prescription and the equipment that the patient is provided. The prescription that this provider writes should meet the testing requirements and the equipment provided by the durable medical equipment provider should be able to meet the prescription require- ment. We find that patients don't necessarily always get what is pre- scribed. Providers may not know different types of equipment are available. hme : What do patients want? Lindell: Patients want small equip- ment and something that is easy for them to carry. They would like to see portable oxygen concentra- tors able to meet their needs. For patients with higher flow, POCs don't meet their needs. We are hoping reimbursement improves and better equipment is developed. Often patients' oxygen prescription changes with activ- ity and with their home systems, they have to get up and walk to the system to turn it up to meet their needs. "We are advocates for living at home comfortably and affordably and to provide the best ways to do that," he said. "Whether it be through technology tools or for those who can't afford it offering things like a GoFundMe, I think we are going to see a growing demand for more of that in the future." hme Apria extends help L a K e F ores T, c alif. – Apria Health- care says it has activated its Emergency Preparedness Plan to prepare local branches in Texas and Florida to serve hundreds of critical respiratory patients im- pacted in the wake of hurricanes. The company has been dispens- ing oxygen to patients, evacuees in shelters and others in need. Nationally, Apria has initiated a company-wide effort to provide emergency assistance for em- ployees who live and work in af- fected areas. The company says all donations raised through two GoFundMe campaigns will be directly distributed to affected employees. Apria has already contributed $25,000 to each campaign and has pledged to match employee donations up to $50,000 for both campaigns.
